No More Plastic Bottles

While my boyfriend and I were driving to Minneapolis today, we started talking about the environment class I am taking at BSU. I brought up a topic that interests me--plastic water bottles.

Plastic water bottles are something that most people use almost every day in their lives. In fact, Americans spend over $16 billion on bottled water every year. Most people buy them for their convenience. But the plastic that those handy water bottles are made out of might not be safe.

Water bottles with the number one or two on the bottom are both recyclable and for one-time use only. Numbers four and five are also made of plastic that will not harm the body. However, there is a chemical called Bisphenol A that is leeched in water bottles with the numbers three, six, and seven.

Bisphenol A is a chemical that leeches an estrogen hormone into the body and can lead to fertility and lower sperm count. It is very hard to control the amount of Bisphenol A in our bodies because it is found in many household items. Eliminating plastic water bottles is one simple way to help lower the risk of getting this bacteria.

Most people think that, since the media are ignoring this issue, they should not be worried. However, 80% of people tested for this chemical have it in their system. People need to be aware of this issue and should start looking at the bottom of their water bottles.
